The Gentle Giant of the Süper Lig: Remembering Ersen Martin

The Turkish Süper Lig has seen its share of characters; fiery managers, “madman” goalkeepers, and clinical finishers. But few combined physical dominance with such a vibrant, lighthearted spirit as Ersen Martin. When he passed away on March 19, 2024, at the age of 44, the footballing world didn’t just lose a prolific striker; it lost one of its most beloved storytellers.

Standing at a towering 6 feet 5 inches (1.96m), Ersen was a nightmare for defenders. Over 12 seasons, he became a fixture of Turkish football, using his immense strength and aerial prowess to terrorize backlines. Yet, behind the intimidating physical presence was a man who navigated the high-pressure world of professional sports with a wink and a smile.

The Orthopedic Superstition: “The Bed That Scored Goals”

In the high-stakes world of elite athletics, players often turn to complex data or rigid routines. Ersen, however, found his edge in the dimensions of a hotel mattress.

As his longtime teammate Servet Çetin fondly remembers, away trips at Denizlispor involved a very specific ritual. While other players were still checking into the lobby, Ersen would be in a dead sprint for the elevators. His goal? To claim the room with the largest bed before Servet could even find his key card.

When Servet finally questioned why a world-class athlete was acting like a teenager at a summer camp, Ersen’s reply was delivered with the stone-faced sincerity of a philosopher:

“Bro, trust me… I score goals when I sleep in this bed.”

In the logic of the dressing room, you don’t argue with results. If the “Sultan-sized” bed yielded a header into the top corner the next day, Servet was happy to take the single bed for the sake of the three points.

The Director’s Cut: A Star Before His Time

Long before the era of personal branding and curated social media feeds, Ersen Martin was his own Creative Director. He possessed a flair for the dramatic that extended far beyond the pitch.

Servet recalls a legendary magazine shoot at the Dedeman Hotel that quickly devolved into a one-man production. The photographer, expecting a standard “man-in-jersey” shot, instead found himself taking orders from the 1.96m striker.

  • “Shoot from here.”
  • “No, lower—get the angle.”
  • “Wait, let me pose on the fire stairs. Make it dramatic.”

By the time the shoot was over, Ersen had moved from “footballer” to “action star.” He spent the afternoon scaling emergency staircases and striking cinematic poses, creating images that looked less like a sports interview and more like a promotional poster for a high-stakes Turkish drama. He wasn’t just a player; he was a personality who understood that football was, at its heart, entertainment.

A Legacy Beyond the Pitch

Ersen’s final years were defined by a different kind of strength. After suffering an aortic rupture in May 2022, he fought a long and grueling battle with health complications. His passing in 2024 left a void in the hearts of fans at Beşiktaş, Trabzonspor, Denizlispor, and the many other clubs he graced.

There was a brief moment in 2009 where somewhere between Lionel Messi magic, Pep Guardiola tiki-taka, and packed Camp Nou crowds… Ersen Martin was quietly doing target-man shifts for Recreativo Huelva like a bloke who’d accidentally wandered into the wrong film set. Here he is battling for the ball with Martin Caceres of Barcelona during the La Liga match between Barcelona and Recreativo Huelva at the Camp Nou Stadium on April 11, 2009

We remember Ersen Martin for the prolific goals and the aerial duels he won. But more importantly, we remember him for the laughter in the hotel hallways, the “action movie” photoshoots, and the giant who believed that a big bed was the secret to a great goal.

Rest in peace, Ersen. May the beds be large and the goals be many.
