Ümit Karan’s Turkish Language Mistakes

Early-2000s Galatasaray dressing rooms were effectively a United Nations assembly with shin pads. Players raised abroad would arrive speaking a version of Turkish that sounded like Google Translate after three beers.

Galatasaray’s German-born striker Ümit Karan, who now comfortably chats away as a television pundit once spoke Turkish like a man assembling IKEA furniture without instructions. Despite his confidence, occasionally wandered into linguistic disaster zones.

Trying to sound intellectual during an interview, he proudly announced:

“Takımın iskeletini koyduk.” – which technically translates to: “We placed the skeleton of the team.”

Close enough, perhaps. Except he delivered it with the seriousness of a NATO spokesperson unveiling military doctrine. The dressing room collapsed instantly. Because in Turkish football, no mistake is ever forgotten — especially when made by someone teammates already suspect writes poetry in secret.
